* They could mutually decide that Melo will opt-in for 2014-15, which will enable the Knicks to trade him at any time (such as at the draft). His new team can then work out an extension with him (and the restrictions relax six months after the trade).

* They could work out an extend-and-trade transaction.

* They could let him become a free agent, and work out a sign-and-trade. For example, if he wants to go to Chicago, the Bulls won’t have enough cap room to pay his full salary unless they clear some additional players off their roster. The teams could try to work out a deal where, say, Gibson & a first round pick come over for a signed-and-traded Melo.

Of course, if the team lets Melo become a free agent, there’s a chance he could sign somewhere else on his own and leave the team with nothing.

With 'Melo's new destinations being limited to teams that can both contend for a championship and are located in a larger market, Houston and Chicago stand as the two prime suitors for Anthony's services. According to the New York Daily News' Frank Isola, they'll both show interest in the seven-time All-Star.

Both teams would need to do some maneuvering to land Anthony. As it stands now, Chicago has no cap room this summer, though they're a Carlos Boozer amnesty away from freeing up a moderate chunk. Still, the Bulls would need to part with a combination of pieces to afford 'Melo, even at a discounted rate.

Houston has nearly $53 million of guaranteed 2014-15 salary tied into its four highest-paid players, which leaves no possibility of obtaining Anthony without dealing away significant salary.

In reality, if Anthony is set on departing for Chicago or Houston, the teams have little choice but to negotiate some sort of swap with Jackson's Knicks.

Now, for Phil's trade parameters.

In any deal, the Knicks aren't likely to add many players whose contracts extend through 2015. A bulk of the team's current roster comes off the books a year from now, lining New York up as a free-agency player that summer.

The Knicks will also be wise to request a haul that includes draft selections. The team won't be selecting in this year's draft or in 2016, and has just one selection each in 2015 and 2017.

Acquiring a pick in the 2014 draft—viewed as the deepest pool in more than a decade—would require Anthony opting into next year and then negotiating an extension with his new team after a trade on or near draft day. Chicago has three selections this year, while Houston has two. Though a more likely option will be waiting until July 1 to negotiate a sign-and-trade.

(Note: It's important not to think of these deals as the Knicks attempting to get equal value for Anthony. That ship sailed when they didn't trade him in February. These are simply New York's attempts to gather some assets moving forward.)

In a July sign-and-trade, Chicago will face the decision of amnestying Boozer or including him in a trade to the Knicks. They'd surely prefer the latter, and the Knicks may not be opposed either, with his contract expiring in time for their planned spending spree.

In addition to Boozer, Jackson could attempt to add Taj Gibson, Mike Dunleavy and a draft pick. Such a deal would allow for Anthony to make roughly $20 million next season.

Though Gibson is a favorite of Tom Thibodeau—Chicago was about five points per 100 possessions better with him on the floor this past season, per Basketball-Reference—Anthony would be a perfect fit with the Bulls as a power forward.

Alternatively, if Chicago manages to bring Nikola Mirotic over for next season along with Anthony, he'd act as a perfect 4 to space the floor for Anthony at the 3. Regardless, Gibson seems to be the odd man out.

Building a well-rounded team around Anthony isn't easy, but the Bulls seem to have the pieces to make it happen. They have strong perimeter defenders to cover 'Melo's flaws there, a worthy center that competes on both ends and a dominant point guard whom Anthony will respect and can rely on without hesitation.

The Knicks would love to include Raymond Felton in this deal, but if his putrid performance wouldn't turn the Bulls away, his pending legal status likely would. He was arraigned on two felony weapons possession charges last February, with trial set to begin on June 2.

Both Dunleavy and Boozer are on expiring deals, while Gibson is a valuable piece to build around for New York. After this move, the Knicks could have over $35 million to spend in free agency next summer.

The talent level in the deal obviously favors Chicago, but if Anthony is set on leaving New York, this swap would net the Knicks a few assets to build with post-2015 while maintaining significant spending room.

The Rockets don't possess the cap room necessary to land Anthony outright, but are strapped with the assets to make a sign-and-trade agreement happen.

Both Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik are set to make over $8 million each next season in the final year of their deals and would probably both need to be shipped north to make a deal work financially. Dolan likely wouldn't be thrilled at the notion of trading for a player who left the team two years ago, but Jackson's sense should overrule the owner's input.

Terrence Jones would be out of a starting job in Houston, as Anthony would slide in as the team's power forward. Jones could be included in the deal, to help financially and supply the Knicks with youth to build on.

The New York Post's Marc Berman suggested that Chandler Parsons would be a Knicks target this summer, but it's doubtful that Daryl Morey would deal away the 25-year-old, who will make less than $1 million next season, and has contributed more than seven win shares in each of the last two seasons. Aside from Anthony, that's the highest 2013-14 Knick win share total belonged to Tyson Chandler with 4.9).

Again, the Knicks would certainly look to package Felton into this trade, but basketball and/or legal troubles would likely derail their efforts.

Dan Feldman of ProBasketballTalk broke down the nature of potential negotiations between both sides. Morey has been heralded as one of the game's most revolutionary front-office minds, while Jackson—who could go down as the game's best coach ever—is a novice at constructing a roster.

The Rockets reportedly believe they can get Melo , but it would almost certainly take a sign-and-trade with the Knicks. What I’d give to be a fly on the wall in negotiations between the old-school Jackson and the analytical Daryl Morey. Those are two decision-makers coming at it from different perspectives, and that could make hashing out a deal difficult.

The negotiating table sure will get interesting during those talks, but if Houston is determined to land Anthony, Morey will need to part ways with some of his prized assets.

A Linsanity reprise at Madison Square Garden would have fans anxious, and would finally solve the team's issues at point, at least in the short-term.

Asik's arrival would likely mean the end of Chandler's New York run. The Knicks could attempt to pull off a deal with the Dallas Mavericks—who are interested in re-acquiring Chandler, according to ESPN's Marc Stein—and return a haul headlined by youth, such as Shane Larkin or Ricky Ledo and picks.

The 2014-15 Knicks could run out a young nucleus of Lin, Tim Hardaway Jr., Iman Shumpert, Jones and Asik. J. R. Smith, Felton, Stoudemire and Bargnani would still have to be part of the picture somehow, but it's clear that this would be a transitional year.

That Knicks team wouldn't win many games, but unlike this past year's disappointment, that wouldn't be an issue.

In the same fashion the Los Angeles Lakers tanked their way to a top lottery pick after losing out on Howard last summer. New York could use next season to build upon Anthony's departure and the fact that they actually own their first rounder in 2015 helps the cause, too.

They'd then have the option to re-sign Lin and Asik for the post-2015 era and would be able to make a run at significant free agents still that summer. If Lin and Asik are renounced, those Knicks could have as much as $40 million to spend in 2015.

Meanwhile, Houston would have Howard, Harden and Anthony locked up long-term, with Parsons and Patrick Beverley in the mix for the future as well. Harden and Anthony would create issues defensively for the Rockets, but once the kinks get worked out, that trio could be a powerhouse in Houston through the rest of the decade.

If Anthony leaves the Knicks, they'll surely be in for another disappointment next season. If at all possible, Jackson should look to collect any last-minute assets before his star's departure.

Even though the short-term payout wouldn't be desirable for much of the fanbase, it would ensure a smooth turnaround, potentially locking in a few building blocks to go along with a prized free agent or two next summer.

Though it may come off as partnering with the enemy, collaborating on a sign-and-trade deal would be the most painless way for New York to combat Anthony's potential departure.

Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors: 7 Potential Landing Spots For the Knicks Star.

The Carmelo Anthony era in New York could finally be coming to an end. Carmelo Anthony trade rumors have been alive and well for the past few seasons, and with the New York Knicks again struggling mid-way through the 2016-17 NBA season, talk has started up again surrounding his future with the franchise.

Per reports, Melo and New York Knicks President Phil Jackson held a meeting on Tuesday to specifically discuss the star forward’s future with the franchise:

Phil Jackson met with Carmelo Anthony today and asked him if he wanted to remain with the Knicks, sources told ESPN.

Melo holds all the power in trade talks currently, as he has a no-trade clause in his contract and to this point has remained adamant that he’d like to remain with the Knicks. Even Melo may be slowing growing sour due to all of the losing however, and the latest conversation could potentially give real legs to all of those Carmelo Anthony trade rumors.

It’s unclear what was said during the meeting, but Jackson likely would love to see what he could get in return for Melo. The Knicks do have some solid young talent and a possible franchise cornerstone in big man Kristaps Porzingis, but they aren’t close to competing for a title as they stand.

At 32 years of age, Anthony may no longer be the difference-maker the Knicks need him to be, and it could make sense for both sides to come to a mutual divorce. The biggest question of all, of course, might come down to whether or not the Knicks can compute a big haul and an ideal landing spot for their star scorer.

Carmelo Anthony may be open to a trade if the right situation unfolds, but it may need to be a perfect situation. With that being said, let’s consider the seven most likely destinations if Melo ends up being on the move in the near future:

Where Could Carmelo Anthony Be Traded?

Sacramento Kings.

The Kings come in as the first realistic Carmelo Anthony trade suitor, just because Rudy Gay has an expiring deal and wants out and this team isn’t really going anywhere at the moment. They could be, of course, if they stop the DeMarcus Cousin trade talk and bring in Melo and get rid of the distraction that is Gay.

Sacramento would still have questions at point guard and shooting guard, but they’d fix the Rudy Gay problem and get an arguable upgrade in the process. It’s unclear what else the Knicks could get in a deal, but some picks and maybe a young player could help make it happen.

Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta just unloaded Kyle Korver in a recent trade and had to talk down Paul Millsap trade rumors not too long after. That doesn’t point to a Carmelo Anthony trade, but it could.

The Hawks seem more inclined to start blowing what they currently have up, but they may not need to if they can bring in Melo and make a decent team even better. The pieces would be in doubt, but if they wouldn’t have to let go of Millsap or Dwight Howard, they could be suddenly looking at a very dangerous starting five.

The real issue here could be compensation on Atlanta’s end, although they do have some interesting young talent in Kent Bazemore, Malcolm Delaney and DeAndre Bembry.

Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder have been good all year, but they haven’t been consistent or elite ever since losing Kevin Durant to free agency. They’ve seen nothing but inconsistency at small forward and power forward and if they traded for Melo, they could help themselves out by getting a scorer who can help at both spots.

OKC is already a playoff team without Melo, but with him they might have enough to compete for a title. They’d probably have to unload some solid prospects and picks for a shot at nailing this trade, however, and it’s arguable they just don’t have enough ammunition to make it happen.

Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls could be an interesting landing spot for three reasons: Melo almost went there before deciding to return to New York when he was last a free agent, the Bulls have some interesting pieces already and the Knicks and Bulls have already done some traded together.

All of that could make this work, but the Bulls would have to give up some interesting prospects to swing a trade that might not really help them all that much. They’d probably love to unload Rajon Rondo at this point, but he’s not a big enough draw. The likes of Doug McDermott, Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic would have to be dangled if a trade was at all possible.

The move would give the Bulls a boost in the starting five, but it really wouldn’t fix some serious issues they have at point guard and this trade could also sap any depth they currently have on the bench.

Boston Celtics.

Boston is a big trade option to consider, as the Celtics are very close to threatening the Raptors for the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference and really could be one more go-to player away from threatening both the Raptors and Cavaliers.

Carmelo Anthony to Boston rumors have been discussed in the past and this could be a great place for him to play out his current contract. It could take a lot to make it happen, but Jae Crowder and Marcus Smart seem to always be thrown into trade talks and the Celtics would probably part with the likes of Kelly Olynyk and/or Amir Johnson to pull a trade like this off, as well.

Boston also has some picks to unload, so they could be the most enticing destination when it comes to what Phil Jackson and the Knicks would like to do.

Toronto Raptors.

Melo would surely jump at the opportunity to go play with the Raptors, who can already defend and sport one of the most efficient offenses in the entire league. Anthony wouldn’t need to shoulder the scoring load all by himself and he wouldn’t move too far away, as the Raptors are just North of New York in Canada.

Toronto is already the second best team in the Eastern Conference and still have a hole at power forward next to Jonas Valanciunas. Melo playing power forward every game may not be ideal, but he’s proven he can be very effective there and especially gives Toronto a strong small ball look.

As far as winning is concerned this could be one of the best spots for Melo. The kicker could be what the Raptors give up. Luckily they have a plethora of young prospects to toss New York’s way. Jakob Poeltl, Lucas Nogueira, Terrence Ross and Bruno Caboclo are just a few names Toronto could toss into trade talks to try to facilitate a Melo trade.

Houston Rockets.

Houston is without a doubt a team to watch when it comes to Carmelo Anthony trade rumors, as we’ve seen Anthony’s name tossed around in Houston before and he’s also played under current Rockets coach, Mike D’Antoni.

Ryan Anderson has delivered mixed results as the starting four in Houston’s lineup, so there is an argument to be made that Melo would be a massive get for one of the league’s best offenses.

The Rockets aren’t broken, of course, so adding an iso scorer like Melo could potentially be a really bad move. However, if the Rockets could sacrifice a few picks and some prospects/veterans, it could also end up being the move that pushes them to the top of the NBA.

Outras opções.

These aren’t the only options. Several teams would be more ideal situations for Melo or there are bad teams that would love him to boost their offense or sell tickets. You can consider the Bucks, Grizzlies, Cavaliers, Clippers – and probably over half of the league – but the situation needs to be right and there needs to be proper compensation.

That’s why some of the options on our list won’t even work. Melo needs to waive his no-trade clause and work with the Knicks to find the right deal. For New York, that’ll be a team that gives them a nice haul for one of the game’s best scorers. For Melo, that will be somewhere he can win and still be remotely close to “the guy”.

Carmelo Anthony Trade Prediction.

Obviously the first course of action lies in Melo’s hands. If he denies any possible trades by not waiving his no-trade clause, then this recent meeting means nothing and the Knicks have their hands tied with what they can really do going forward.

Assuming Melo is sick of losing and wants to go play for a contender, of course, we can look at which Carmelo Anthony trade rumors come off as being most realistic. Any of these 10 we touched on are certainly possible (plus there’s always that Cleveland Cavaliers dream trade), but there’s only one that stands out above the rest: the Boston Celtics.

Whether the Celtics believe Melo can get them over the hump is yet to be determined, but he certainly can help relieve some of the scoring pressure from Isaiah Thomas. Jae Crowder doesn’t feel like a long-term fit with this team, anyways, and Boston is one of the few teams sitting on prospects and picks these days.

Boston could be holding out to land Gordon Hayward or someone else, but why wait? Melo is 32, but he’s not useless. He gives the Celtics one more true gamer, a clutch performer and a proven scorer. It’s worth wondering if he can be a winner with this team and settle into a defined role beyond just being “the guy”, but if the Celtics swing the deal, odds are they believe he can and will.

That still might not be enough to get the Celtics to the #2 seed or help them get past the Cavs, but they’re certainly not doing that as they stand. Pulling a trade for Melo could and if he goes, that’s probably the trade that goes down.

Of course, none of this is happening, as Melo reportedly doesn’t want out:

Even more important, is the rumor that Melo would only be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Cavaliers or Clippers.

As we touched on, those trades don’t make sense. The Cavs just won a title with their current team, got a shooter in Kyle Korver and will be getting J. R. Smith back before the playoffs. They don’t need or want Melo and they’d be stupid to swing a trade for him.

The Clippers would love to have Melo and aside from the Celtics – who make a ton of sense – they actually do make a little sense. Unfortunately, they have nothing to trade and their key players are about to hit free agency. A starting five of Chris Paul, J. J. Redick, Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan could be deadly, but what bench would the Knicks have if they swung a trade to make it happen?

The answer is none, and it’s quite likely they’d also have to unload Redick and/or one of their other stars to make it happen. Melo isn’t worth that at this point in his career and he’s really only a help if they can somehow get him, keep their depth and also not lose any of their key stars.

That probably means the Clippers and Cavs aren’t serious contenders when it comes to Carmelo Anthony trade rumors, and the latest information also likely kills any trade talk. Still, if Melo changes his mind, keep an eye on the Celtics.

Trading season is upon us! While the NBA trade deadline (February 23) is never quite as active as, say, the Major League Baseball trade deadline, there’s still fun speculation and a handful of deals that will go down. Ignore the stats in the big deals, because it’s often about way more than just points and rebounds. Bad teams look to shed salaries, rebuilding teams look to acquire assets for the future, and contenders look to shore up their roster for a playoff run. So who should be on the move? While not necessarily everyone that should be traded will be, we dug into the ESPN Trade Machine to take a look at 10 deals that make sense right now.

10. Greg Monroe.

Power forward Greg Monroe has quickly fallen out of favor in Milwaukee, just two seasons after signing with the team. He’s no longer in the starting lineup and playing just 21.8 minutes per game, with the team instead opting for a younger, quicker lineup on the court. But for a different team that needs a banger near the basket that can score and rebound, Monroe could be an asset. Because he can opt out after this season, leaving behind $17.9 million, it would be a major favor to Monroe to deal him somewhere that he can rebuild his value.

The Dallas Mavericks have a need for inside scoring, while the Bucks could stand to get more three-point shooting on their roster. A swap of Monroe for shooting guard Wesley Matthews could help out both teams in the short term, giving Milwaukee a better roster right now while providing more future cap space for the Mavs if Monroe does opt out this summer.

9. Carmelo Anthony.

At one point, it looked like Carmelo Anthony wasn’t going anywhere. But after some escalating problems between Anthony and team president Phil Jackson, it now looks possible that ‘Melo might agree to move. But his home is in New York, where he forced a trade from Denver so many years ago. He even had an option to leave the pitiful Knicks in the summer of 2014 to sign with a then-prosperous Chicago Bulls team that had Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Jimmy Butler, and coach Tom Thibodeau. He chose to stay in New York then. But should he decide to waive his no-trade clause, Anthony’s options might be down to just the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers have lost Kevin Love for at least a month and a half, but a deal surrounding center Tristan Thompson and J. R. Smith could make sense for the Knicks. There would probably have to be draft assets heading to New York in any deal, but Thompson and Smith for Anthony, reserve point guard Brandon Jennings, and center Kyle O’Quinn works from a financial standpoint. The Cavs get assets to keep their championship dreams alive for now, while the Knicks dump Anthony and gain a strong, young center in Thompson.

8. Paul Millsap.

There was some question about whether the Atlanta Hawks would actually move power forward Paul Millsap this year, but that was alleviated a bit when they surprised everyone and dealt away shooter Kyle Korver. Millsap is set to be a free agent, and recently head coach Mike Budenholzer has said that Millsap is staying put. But Atlanta could cash in now by dealing him to a true contender — sorry, Hawks fans — like the Utah Jazz.

Okay, so the Jazz aren’t a major contender in the difficult West. But as they’ve become better, power forward Derrick Favors has shown decline. He’s playing just 23.5 minutes per game this season and averaging just 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, he has dealt with injuries, and there have been rumors that he might be on the move. It might not be the best deal for Utah long-term, considering that Millsap could walk away for no return, but swapping the two forwards makes sense for both teams. The Hawks get an asset that’s signed through next season, while the Jazz get better now and get the inside edge on signing Millsap this summer.

7. Taj Gibson.

If the Cavaliers can’t trade for Carmelo Anthony, the trade deadline could lead them to the Chicago Bulls. Power forward Taj Gibson is coming up on free agency, costs considerably less than Millsap in dollars, and would also cost quite a bit less in trade assets. Gibson is having an underrated season in what has been an underrated career in Chicago, starting for the Bulls and averaging 11.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 51.9% shooting from the floor.

Cleveland really could use the frontcourt help, especially with the uncertainty around Love. They don’t have a ton of assets to give up, but with Gibson’s contract expiring this summer it really shouldn’t cost a whole lot. The salary of Iman Shumpert would make the deal work, and if that’s not palatable for the Cavs they could go with a package of Channing Frye and DeAndre Liggins instead. Chicago gains some badly needed outside shooting, while the Cavs get some toughness down low.

6. Rajon Rondo.

Let’s face it, signing Rajon Rondo was a head-scratcher from the start for a Bulls team that has been run over the last few years like a failing business just desperately trying to make a profit. The Bulls brought in a player that didn’t fit their personnel or their coach, simply because he seemed to be an upgrade. Spoiler alert: It hasn’t worked. Rondo is having one of the worst seasons of his career, when looking at points, assists, and shooting percentage. But you know who needs a backup point guard? The Cleveland Cavaliers.

This is where it gets crazy. The Cavs can acquire Jameer Nelson (the point guard they need) and Mike Miller from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for a first round draft pick and trade exceptions. The Bulls send Rondo to Denver along with their first round pick, and Denver sends back shooting guard Will Barton to open up playing time for 19-year-old Jamal Murray. Everybody wins.

5. Nerlens Noel.

There are two things that the Philadelphia 76ers have too much of: talented, young big men, and losses. They probably can’t do much about the latter this season, but they could fix their first problem by trading the forgotten man, Nerlens Noel. After averaging 11.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in 29.3 minutes in his second season last year, Noel has been limited to just 11 games this year — averaging 7.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 14.7 minutes per game. The former No. 6 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft still has talent that could be best utilized elsewhere.

So what about the Portland Trail Blazers? They have a draft pick coming up that should be somewhat enticing for the 76ers. The Blazers could deal forward Noah Vonleh, starter Al-Farouq Aminu, and a top 5 protected draft pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Noel. That would give the Blazers quite the young core of Noel, Damian Lillard, C. J. McCollum, and Allen Crabbe.

4. Derrick Rose.

The Bulls surprised a lot of people when they were actually able to trade Derrick Rose last offseason, sending him to the Knicks in return for, essentially, useful players in Robin Lopez and Jerian Grant. Rose is on the last year of his “MVP contract,” making around $21 million this season. The Knicks are a disaster, however, and Rose’s recent headscratcher of leaving to go to Chicago to attend to a family matter without telling anybody exacerbates the problem. New York needs to compile assets to help build a competitive team, and somebody is probably interested in a half-season of Rose.

The Phoenix Suns currently have a logjam in their backcourt and some cap space, which could be a match. The Suns could dump Brandon Knight, a 25-year-old with career averages of 15.5 points, 4.4 assists, and 35.9% shooting from three-point range in exchange for Rose. Knight isn’t a perfect player, but he’s still young and might be able to develop with the Knicks in a way that he can’t while coming off the bench in Phoenix. The fact that Knight is signed to a relatively reasonable deal for the next three seasons makes this deal sensible for both sides.

3. Jahlil Okafor.

Another player on the Philadelphia 76ers that needs a new home is center Jahlil Okafor. The number three overall pick from the 2015 NBA draft has been a bit of a disappointment in Philly, and with the bulk of big men on the roster it would be good for both parties if the 76ers could find a trade partner. That partner might be the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Pelicans, like the 76ers, aren’t going anywhere this season. Sending former Sixers point guard Jrue Holiday–who is set to be a free agent after this season–to Philadelphia along with a future protected first round pick might end up being enough for the Pelicans to swing bringing Okafor on board. This allows Anthony Davis to play more on the perimeter on offense and spreads the floor a bit more, which could help the team improve going forward. With how much cap space the 76ers have, the deal works in theory.

2. Ricky Rubio.

It’s no secret that the Minnesota Timberwolves would like to move point guard Ricky Rubio. They have Zach LaVine (who is out for the season with a torn ACL) and Kris Dunn, who are the future of the team in the backcourt, and would desperately like to make a change and give Dunn — as well as fellow point guard Tyus Jones — time to develop. With Rubio signed for two more seasons and making $13.4 million this year, it might be hard to find a match for Minnesota.

But the Brooklyn Nets could be the one. Also a terrible basketball team, the Nets have found themselves trying to piece together whatever they can at the point — running Jeremy Lin and Spencer Dinwiddie out there. The Nets could take on Rubio’s salary, giving them a guy who really can’t shoot the ball but might be better for distributing to the other players on the roster. In return, the Nets could send veteran guard Randy Foye back to Minnesota.

1. Luis Scola.

He’s an overlooked player because of his age and the team he plays for, but forward Luis Scola could still be of help to a team that needs some scoring in the post. On the season, the Nets’ big man is averaging just 13.4 minutes per game to go along with 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds. Those aren’t big numbers, of course. But considering that the team acquiring him would owe just the remaining part of his one-year, $5.5 million contract, it wouldn’t be a stretch to find the 36-year-old a new home away from the tanking Nets.

The Houston Rockets could use the veteran forward. He’s familiar with the organization, having spent five seasons there to start his career, and would likely be amenable to a deal. Houston would love to unload the disappointing and expensive Corey Brewer, who is set to make $15.2 million over the next two seasons. Brooklyn could swap Scola for Brewer and the Rockets’ first round pick (it’s looking like it’ll be in the 25-30 range) and everyone would be happy with the outcome. The Nets would get a draft pick and Houston would get a player that can help now, plus $7.6 million in extra cap room the next two years.
